Important letter from DCC regarding the mobile library

Dear valued mobile library customer

We are emailing you on behalf of Devon County Council. Devon County Council is reviewing its library services and the different ways that people use it. That's because the council is facing huge financial challenges, and in order for them to invest more money in services that support vulnerable children and adults, they are having to make considerable savings elsewhere in their budget. The council therefore is proposing to stop running the mobile library service.  We run four mobile libraries on the council’s behalf, three of which are 15 years old and at the end of their serviceable lives, and the fourth is nine years old.  All of our aging vehicles have become increasingly unreliable and expensive to maintain. There are also fewer people now using the mobile library service. Tomorrow, they will be launching a consultation with library customers to get a better understanding about how people will use the library service in future. They will be asking whether you have considered other ways to access library services, such as our Good Neighbours service, Home Library Service, or via our 50 library buildings across Devon.  Or, whether you are familiar with the range of digital books and other materials that are available to all of our library members. The consultation will be online from Friday 31st March //devon.cc/mobilelibraries, and you will be able to read more about it on the Council's website. Alternatively, there will be copies of the consultation on each of our four mobile library routes, and in your nearest library. If you have any questions about the consultation, please visit the Have Your Say webpage or contact Devon County Council via communitiesconsultation@devon.gov.uk or telephone 0345 155 1001.

The Council has made it clear that they will not be making any decision about the proposal until they have had chance to consider all of the responses to their consultation. If you would like to respond to the consultation, we would encourage you to do so directly to Devon County Council. The consultation will close on Friday 26th May.

Christmas Shoeboxes for Ukraine

Christmas Shoeboxes for Ukraine

Many of you have the red shoeboxes handed out at the October Farmers Market and also at Anthony’s Quiz night. We are getting quite close to our deadline, when we will need to have these boxes back for collection and then transport to Ukraine.

We are very grateful for anything you can do for shipment of Christmas boxes to Ukraine.

  • Would you please bring them either to the Brayford Chapel and leave them in the porch, or to the November Farmers Market at the Village Hall on November 12th. This will be the last day before they are collected at High Bray Church on Sunday, the 13th.
  • Even if you do not feel you can fill them, we would be most grateful if you can bring the empty boxes back.

Can you help by making a donation towards the expenses of getting the Christmas shoeboxes to Ukraine? Please contact Madeleine & Jonathan Brownell on 01598 710389 or come to the November 12th Farmers Market.

Please see the attached flyer for full information - supplies for Ukraine.

Bins out by 6am please!

Residents who live in North Devon will need to put their bins and bags out by 6am on the morning or evening before their collection from now on.

The new, earlier display time, of 6am rather than 7am, is to enable the crews to have more flexible working hours if and when needed.

Lead Member for Environment at North Devon Council, Councillor Netti Pearson says: “We’ve moved the start of our bin rounds forward by an hour so our crews can start their rounds earlier if need be. I’d like to thank everyone in advance for their help and understanding with this, although as many bins go out the night before, most households shouldn’t notice the change.”

Residents are being reminded that they can check when their bin collections are by visiting the council's webpage.

Full information on what goes in your bin, box and bag can be found online.

UKRAINE APPEAL Update

As you know the Churches of High Bray, the Chapel, & Charles launched a ‘Ukraine Appeal’ a month ago to support the emergency assistance for Ukrainians, both inside and outside of the Country.

So far, our communities have raised £2,722 (!) which has been sent to ‘Computers for Charities’, a Sussex based charity which has aided refugees and the dispossessed in Eastern Europe since the late 1990’s through local church organisations in those Countries. This donated amount is a remarkable achievement for our small community, and more donations come in weekly.

As the need in Ukraine continues to grow daily, if you feel you can assist, would you kindly contact one of the following:

Can you help?

Please either send a cheque made out to: ‘High Bray PCC’ with a note saying it is for the ‘Ukraine Appeal’.
