If you’re looking for ways to
give your garden a bit of a boost this year, then you may want to consider
home composting.
North Devon District Council has teamed up with WRAP (the Waste and
Resources Action Programme) to offer residents living in Brayford the
opportunity to buy a subsidised home composter.
There are three sizes to choose from:
-
a 220 litre compost bin for
just £8,
-
a 330 litre bin for £10,
-
or a 250 litre 4 sided
square compost bin for £20 - that includes free delivery.
The District Council also has a
limited number of free compost bins available to residents who don’t
currently receive a green bin service.
Not only can home composting benefit your garden by helping the soil drain
better, and providing most of the nutrients your garden plants need, it is
also good for the environment and it’s easy.
By composting your garden and kitchen scraps you help reduce the amount of
waste deposited in landfill sites. At least 30% of the average person’s
household bin waste could be turned into compost.
Fruit and vegetable peelings, dead flowers, grass cuttings, egg shells,
pet hair, coffee granules, toilet roll innards, teabags, the contents of
your vacuum cleaner and even old shredded bank statements and bills can be
added to your compost bin.
Councillor Rodney Cann, North Devon District Council’s Lead Member for
Waste and Recycling, says: "Home composting is a great way to divert
so much of your household rubbish away from landfill sites while doing
something really positive to help the environment.
"I would urge everybody to take up this wonderful offer of a home
compost bin. The Council has a limited number of free home compost bins
available to households not receiving a green waste collection."
